"I learned really quickly that a seatbelt saved my life,
but my dog - my very best friend in the whole world, didn't have anything to protect her at all."
-P.Suanpan, The Dog Seatbelt Lady
My dog Piper and I were always out and about, exploring new towns, going on hikes, swimming adventures, playing endless hours of fetch, and just loving each other's company. We were inseparable.
One day, we were on our way to Centennial Park for a walk around the lake, when another driver lost control of his car and slammed right into us.
Piper wasn't buckled up...I never buckled her up. She was thrown into the back of my seat, broke her back and was paralyzed. I could hear her crying as she laid in the footwell behind me, and I sat stuck behind my seatbelt in the driver's seat.
I learned really quickly that day that a seatbelt saved my life, but my dog - my very best friend in the whole world, didn't have anything to protect her at all. Piper's injuries were so painful that I had no choice but to say goodbye to my girl that night.
Shortly afterwards, I started researching seatbelts for dogs, learning about Center for Pet Safety. They have a certification program and perform crash testing on dog car safety restraints. Back in 2017, only 4 brands (out of hundreds on the market) had passed the test. Now in 2021, there are 5.
I decided right then and there that all pet parents needed to know about this. After all, if you're going to buckle up your dog, it better work to protect your pup in a crash, right? Otherwise, what's the point?
The first annual Piper's Walk emerged in June 2018, and the mission continues on each and every day. Spreading awareness for dog seatbelt safety, and getting dogs buckled up in certified seatbelt. Making sure that you never have to experience what I went through, losing Piper.
Come to Piper's Walk and keep your 4-legged BFF safe in the car - Let's do this together!
